OverDrive

OverDrive is one of the two largest downloadable services offered by the Berlin-Peck library (along with hoopla). With OverDrive, you have access to thousands of the latest ebooks and audiobooks, as well as video, magazines, comics, and graphic novels. You can read/listen/watch right in your internet browser, or download titles to your smartphone, tablet, Kindle, or other device, to use later. Titles are automatically returned once your checkout period is over, so there are no late fees to worry about.

hoopla or OverDrive? Because OverDrive has no montly borrowing limit, we recommend you check to see if your title is available on OverDrive first. If your title is checked out in OverDrive, head over to hoopla — there’s no wait!

How do I use OverDrive?

Visit OverDrive’s website for complete instructions on all available devices.

Internet Browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Explorer/Edge

Read/Watch/Listen in your Browser

This option requires a constant internet connection. Titles will NOT be downloaded to your device for offline use. It’s the best option for desktop computers, or laptop computers when you have WiFi. If you want to read/watch/listen on the go with a smartphone or tablet, it’s best to use one of the other options below. OverDrive Read and OverDrive Listen are not available for the Edge browser.

 

1. Go to the OverDrive website

Click the link above, or visit libraryconnection.overdrive.com. You may want to bookmark this page for easy access.

 

2. Sign in

Click SIGN IN. Use the library finder to find the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, and enter your Berlin-Peck Memorial Library card number. Checking REMEMBER MY CARD NUMBER ON THIS DEVICE will save your library card number, so you don’t have to enter it again.

 

3. Search and browse

  • If you already know what you’re looking for, click SEARCH and type in a title, name, or keyword.
  • If you’d like to browse titles on a certain subject, click SUBJECTS and pick a subject.
  • If you’d like to browse new or popular titles, click COLLECTIONS.

4. Borrow

You can do this either by selecting BORROW under the cover, or by clicking or tapping the cover to go to the title’s details page (where you can see extra details and options for the title before you borrow it). You’ll need to be signed in to complete this step.

To see all of the titles you have borrowed, click the bookshelf icon, or click MY ACCOUNT then LOANS.

 

5. Enjoy

After you borrow a title, a button will appear that says READ NOW (books), WATCH NOW (video), or LISTEN NOW (audio). Click and enjoy!

Windows 7 / Windows Vista Computers

These instructions are for downloading only. Downloading is not necessary on a desktop computer with a constant internet connection. For instructions on reading in your internet browser, see above.

 

What do you need?

Before getting started, you will need to install the following programs.

These instructions are for downloading OR streaming through the app. Downloading is not necessary on a desktop computer with a constant internet connection. You can also stream (READ NOW, WATCH NOW, and LISTEN NOW) through an internet browser, without installing the app.

 

What do you need?

Before getting started, you will need to install the following programs.

 

1. Set up OverDrive for Windows

Open the OverDrive app and follow the prompts to sign in using your Berlin-Peck Memorial Library card.

 

2. Add your library

In the OverDrive app, select the ADD A LIBRARY button, then follow the prompts. Once you find Berlin-Peck Memorial Library (Library Connections, Inc.), click or tap its digital collection to save it.

 

3. Search and browse

Click ADD A TITLE to begin.

  • If you already know what you’re looking for, click SEARCH and type in a title, name, or keyword.
  • If you’d like to browse titles on a certain subject, click SUBJECTS and pick a subject.
  • If you’d like to browse new or popular titles, click COLLECTIONS.

To read/watch/listen in your browser without downloading, select READ NOW, WATCH NOW, or LISTEN NOW.

To download video or MP3 audiobooks, select ADD TO APP. Click the cover to watch/listen. How to transfer MP3 audiobooks to CD or MP3 player.

To download ebooks, click CHOOSE A FORMAT, then select your format.

Mac Computers

Don’t go over your data limit! To avoid using wireless data, make sure to choose ADD TO APP when your device is connected to WiFi, and give it time to finish downloading. Streaming options (READ NOW, WATCH NOW, or LISTEN NOW) will NOT download to your device for offline use, and may use your mobile data if WiFi is not available.

What do you need?

You will need to use a computer to transfer ebooks to your eReader.

Before getting started, you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions for Mac or Windows (authorize ADE with your OverDrive account or Apple ID) to transfer books to your eReader.

2. Sign in

5. Download

First, connect your eReader to your computer.

Once you’ve borrowed a title, click CHOOSE A FORMAT. For the best experience, we recommend EPUB eBook or Open EPUB eBook, though many eReaders also support PDF eBook and Open PDF eBook.

Downloaded eBooks will open in Adobe Digital Editions.

 

6. Transfer to eReader

To transfer an eBook to your eReader, open the LIBRARY VIEW in Adobe Digital Editions (click the LIBRARY button in the top-left corner, if needed). From there, drag and drop the eBook into your eReader, which should appear on the left under DEVICES.

Once you’ve transferred a library eBook, you can read it on your device just like any other eBook.

Kindle eReaders

Kindle e-Ink eReaders

These instructions are for e-Ink Kindles (including Paperwhite) that do not support apps. Instructions for Kindle Fire tablets, which support the OverDrive app as well as additional digital formats, are in the section below. e-Ink Kindles are compatible with Kindle books only.

 

What do you need?

You will need to use a computer to send ebooks to your Kindle through Amazon. You will also need a free Amazon account.

 

1. Go to the OverDrive website

2. Sign in

Click SIGN IN. Use the library finder to find the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, and enter your Berlin-Peck Memorial Library card number. Checking REMEMBER MY CARD NUMBER ON THIS DEVICE will save your library card number, so you don’t have to enter it again.

 

3. Search and browse

Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite are compatible with Kindle books only, so you may want to filter out other formats. In your library’s digital collection, use the advanced search or search filters to find and borrow an eBook that’s available in the Kindle Book format (or, look at the “Formats” on each title’s details page).

  • If you already know what you’re looking for, click SEARCH and type in a title, name, or keyword.
  • If you’d like to browse titles on a certain subject, click SUBJECTS and pick a subject.
  • If you’d like to browse new or popular titles, click COLLECTIONS.

5. Send to eReader via Amazon

First, connect your eReader to your computer.

Once you’ve borrowed a title, click CHOOSE A FORMAT, then Kindle Book. You’ll be taken to Amazon’s website to complete your checkout.

On Amazon’s website, follow the on-screen prompts to “Get library book” and wirelessly deliver it to your Kindle eReader. You’ll need to sign into (or create) an Amazon account to complete this process.

Kindle Fire

These instructions are only for Kindles that support apps. Instructions for Kindle e-Ink tablets, which do not support the OverDrive app, are in the section above.

 

What do you need?

Before getting started, you will need to install the following apps.

6. Enjoy

Once you’ve downloaded a title, it will appear on your Kindle library (Kindle format ebooks) or your bookshelf in the OverDrive app (EPUB ebooks, audio, video). Tap the cover to read/watch/listen.

Can’t find your downloaded books? The location depends on which format you downloaded. If you download an EPUB ebook or PDF ebook, it will be sent to the OverDrive app bookshelf. If you download a Kindle ebook, the book will be sent to your Kindle library. Audio and video will always go to the OverDrive app bookshelf.

iPods / MP3 Players / CDs

Follow the instructions above for Windows or Mac computers using OverDrive for Windows or Mac to transfer MP3 audiobooks.
