Using the Library

Do you have questions about services we offer here at the library? Great, we’ve got answers!

How to Get a Library Card

To obtain a Berlin-Peck Memorial Library card:

  • Adults must present a current, valid identification (for example: a Connecticut driver’s license) with name and address showing residency in Berlin, East Berlin, or Kensington. If your current address is not on your license, please bring in a lease, car registration, or electric bill with your name and address on it.
  • Children must have a parent’s signature on the application form and one piece of parent’s identification with home address. A child may obtain a children’s card at any age. When entering grade 7, a child may request an adult library card.

There is a $1 charge for a replacement library card if it is lost or stolen. A replacement card will not be issued to anyone with outstanding fines. Expired cards can be renewed for free. Please bring in your old library card and driver’s license with current address to renew your expired card.

How to Borrow Materials

Borrowing privileges are available to any Connecticut resident with a valid library card obtained from his or her home library. Your hometown library card allows you to borrow materials from most public libraries in Connecticut. The Connecticar delivery service allows most materials borrow from other libraries to be returned here. Conversely, Berlin-Peck materials may be left at most other libraries in Connecticut.

How to Renew Materials

Some items may be renewed in person, over the phone, or online.

To renew online:

  1. Go to My Account.
  2. Click on Renew My Materials.
  3. Enter your library card number.
  4. Enter your PIN (default is “changeme”).
  5. Click on List Charged items.

The next screen will tell you if all items were renewable and the new due date.

Some items need to be renewed by phone if there are multiple barcodes on one title. Items may not be renewed more than once.  An item cannot be renewed if another patron has placed a hold on it.

Visit the library catalog to begin any of these account functions.

How to Reserve Materials

You can reserve books online, in person, or over the phone.

To place a hold online, begin at our catalog.

Use the search function to find the item you’re looking for, then click “Place Hold” to the left on the title.

You will be prompted to enter your library card number and PIN (“changeme” by default).

There is no charge for reserves. Most items may be reserved except for Fast-Track books and Fast-Track DVDs.

Interlibrary Loan

If you would like to borrow an item that is not owned by Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, you may request that it be sent from another library in Connecticut.  Availability and restrictions apply, depending on the item and the lending library.  Please call Reference (828-7126) for more information.

Overdue Fines & Lost Items

Fines for late items are charged on a per item per day basis and are as follows:

  • $0.15 cents for overdue adult materials
  • $0.05 cents for overdue children’s materials
  • $1.00 for DVDs, Fast-Track books, and CD-ROMs.
  • $10 per day for overdue museum passes.

Fines will not accrue past $5 per item, excluding museum passes which can go up to $50. Patrons may pay the replacement cost for lost materials but not the overdue fines. This money is not refundable. Replacement cost is calculated for items as:

  • In print: the list price of the item
  • Out of print: average list price for the type of material

Lost items may be paid for with cash or check. The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library does not accept credit or debit cards.
